Bartolemeo von Pezzen, ambassador to Constantinople from 1586 to 1591, wanted to describe Turkish habits and customs to his lord, Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. Ralamb’s Ottoman Costumes Book (1658)

The ‘Rålamb Costume Book’ is a small volume by an undidentified Ottoman artist, containing 121 miniatures in Indian ink with gouache and some gilding, displaying Turkish officials, occupations and folk types.

They were acquired in Constantinople in 1657-58 by Claes Rålamb who led a Swedish embassy to the Sublime Porte. The manuscript was acquired by the Swedish Royal Library in 1886. Read more… or reach images…

“Tyrkerværk” (The Turkish Publication) of Melcior Lorck (1576)

Melchior Lorck  (1526/27 – after 1583) was a renaissance painter, draughtsman, and printmaker of Danish-German origin. He produced the most thorough visual record of the life and customs of Turkey in the 16th century, to this day a unique source. Read more…

After his assigment in 1556, Lorck spent three and a half years in Istanbul where he drew ancient and modern monuments of the city,  the customs and dresses of the various peoples gathered from all parts of the Ottoman Empire as well as the members of the army.
